Garage door openers aren't the quietest machines ever, but some are louder than others. If you have an older garage door opener, it may be quite noisy! Maintaining your garage door and taking time to tighten or oil its moving parts can make your garage door quieter, and that can make life at home more enjoyable.

There are many things that you can do to silence your garage door. The professionals at Uplift Garage can help. We provide garage door repairs and maintenance to help our customers. Whether you have a noisy garage door, a broken garage door spring, or need garage door installation, we can help.

Are Noisy Garage Doors Problematic?

Some garage door openers are noisy by nature. Today, some companies make garage door openers that are whisper quiet, and that appeals to consumers who like to maintain a peaceful household. If your garage door opener is getting noisier over time, this can indicate a problem. What's wrong with your garage door may be discernible by listening to the noise your garage door is making.

  • Squeaking noises. Squeaking noises indicate that your garage door needs lubrication. Often, squeaking noises happen when rollers dry out and need to be oiled.
  • Banging noises. Banging noises can be an indication of loose hardware or broken hardware on your garage door. You may also hear this noise if your garage door's chain drive is loose.
  • Grinding noises. A grinding noise can be an indication that your door's gears are worn down, or some of the components of the garage door are misaligned. Continuing to use a garage door that produces these grinding noises can add to the wear and tear, leading to more extensive repairs.

What Causes Noisy Garage Doors?

Garage doors need regular maintenance. You can prevent noisy garage doors by servicing your garage door periodically.

  • Inspect your garage door once per year. Look for loose screws, nuts, and bolts. Listen for noises and points of friction. Lubricate parts as needed.
  • Get your garage door serviced regularly by a professional.
  • Listen for the noises your garage door makes to get louder, and when this happens, call the pros at Uplift Garage.

Ways to Make Your Garage Door Quieter

There are many things you can do to make your garage door quieter. Below are some steps that you can take as a homeowner to help reduce the friction that causes a loud garage door noise.

Lubricate the Rollers and Panel Hinges

Use white lithium grease to lubricate the various parts of your garage door, including metal rollers and panel hinges. Inspect the garage door rollers as you add lubricant. Remove debris from the area around the rollers, and look for rollers that have deteriorated or become wobbly: these need to be replaced. Have this work done by a professional.

Plastic rollers shouldn't be lubricated at all, because lubricant can cause plastic rollers to deteriorate. If your plastic rollers are loud or wobbly, have them replaced.

Tighten Nuts, Bolts, and Screws

Look for nuts, bolts, and screws that have come undone, and tighten them as needed. You'll need some basic tools like a wrench and socket set. Remember that nuts and screws tighten to the right.

Insulate the Garage Door

Insulating your garage door won't make your garage door less noisy, but it will dampen the sound to prevent it from traveling to the living spaces in your home. Add insulation to your unfinished garage, including in the ceiling and walls. Once you've placed insulation in the walls and ceiling, use drywall to finish the look and further dampen the noise.

Take this time to weatherstrip your garage, as well. This helps keep your garage warmer and can also help keep the noise in your garage.

Choose Torsion Springs Over Extension Springs

Extension springs can get wobbly over time, causing your garage door to get louder. Torsion springs have fewer moving parts and are overall quieter. If your garage has extension springs, consider having these springs replaced with a torsion spring system.

Have this work done by a professional, as the spring system in your garage door relies on a lot of tension. Springs under tension can cause severe injuries when they snap or fly off. It's not worth the risk.

Replace the Opener

Due to improvements in technology, garage door openers have gotten quieter with time. Older garage door openers may clang and clatter, but newer garage door openers have quiet functionality that can improve life at home. New garage door openers also come with nice features like Wi-Fi connectivity and smart functionality.

Typical garage door openers last about 10 to 15 years. If your garage door opener is more than a decade old, replace your opener with a new one that's quieter and works better.

Are Garage Door Silencers Worth It?

Garage door silencers are designed to absorb the vibration from your garage door opener. Silencers can soften the sounds coming from your garage if the opener itself is a major contributor to the noise, but it's helpful to identify the source of the noise before going this route.

If most of the noise is coming from noisy components like rollers, some lubricants on the rollers may take care of most of the problem. Talk to a professional to find out how to make garage door quieter.
