Inquire About Maintenance

01

Grinding or Squeaking.

Chances are that your rollers are insufficiently lubricated or are worn out. If it’s the former, apply lithium- or silicone-based grease. If it’s the latter, call in a professional to get them replaced.

02

Rattling.

If your garage door is rattling, it could be that some of the nuts, bolts, and screws on your garage door have become loose. Tighten the hardware with a wrench and socket set, and that will likely silence the problem.

03

Popping.

Often, popping noises can be traced back to the torsion spring, which needs to either be lubricated or adjusted. Working on torsion springs is highly dangerous and should be left to a professional.

Here are a few signs to look for that indicate you may be dealing with a broken spring.

01

Your Door Closes or Opens too Fast or slow.

If your garage door abruptly jerks closed or open, it is likely the springs are experiencing problems. The opener system has a mechanism to control how fast the door lowers and raises. When any springs are damaged, it may interfere with this safety feature due to the excess weight on other components, making it unable to control the speed.

02

Your Door Feels Heavy or Won't Move.

Does your garage door suddenly feel heavy? This may be a sign that your garage door extension springs are broken and in need of replacement. Since garage doors are extremely heavy you put yourself at risk of injury trying to inspect the door on your own. It is best to leave this service to the professionals if you think something is off.

03

Your Door Appears Crooked.

You may think a crooked garage door isn’t a big deal, but it is not a problem to be overlooked. This is typically a sign of the extension springs being broken and requires immediate attention. The door appears crooked from this issue because one side of the door is getting pulled up quicker than the other.

04

There Are Large Gaps in Your Springs.

If a torsion spring has snapped, you could see visible gaps of up to a few inches wide. Sometimes, people can even hear a loud snapping noise coming from their garage and discover a broken spring. This will require a specialist to come in and replace the torsion spring. It is also advised to get the other springs evaluated to ensure all components work properly and none received damage from the broken spring.

05

Your Door's Cables are Loose.

You may find loose cables hanging from your garage and think the issue lies with the cables. In reality, cables will loosen or slack when the torsion springs are broken, adding more stress onto those components. This means the springs are to blame for the issue!

WHAT IF YOUR GARAGE DOOR RATTLES IN WIND?

You Might Simply Need to Tighten Loose Parts

If you’re lucky, then you might only need to tighten some loose nuts and bolts to fix the problem. Your garage door likely has many nuts and bolts fastening it in place, and many of those nuts and bolts may have loosened over time.

Rust Could Also Be to Blame

Another thing to consider is that certain parts of your garage door might have become rusty. If you don’t take the time to lubricate your garage door every so often, then many different moving parts can rust.

It’s important to have a good garage door that you can rely on. If your current garage door is rattling in the wind, then this means that something is wrong. Most garage doors are going to rattle a bit when they open and close, but it’ll be quite annoying if your garage door is constantly rattling whenever the wind picks up. This isn’t something that you have to live with. You can take the time to fix your garage door, or you can call the experts at Uplift Garage for your garage door maintenance needs.
